That’s why it’s a great idea to watch drummers performing a solo either at an event, concert or in product endorsement video. The only drawback is that their abilities don’t always come through in the music they play. Every drummer wants to become better and often it’s our greatest heroes who play with a mastery of technique that make us want to improve. Then there’s the notion of developing “chops”, which is a common word used for your technical abilities. If you aspire to be great at any style of music, then you must spend time studying the masters of that style. Aspiration is putting your inspiration into action. While you can be inspired at any moment by almost anything that you deem to be great, aspiration is slightly different. Other drum heroes might be a teenage kid half way around the world that expresses their talent in an amazing drum cover. Some of them might be famous drummers you know. There’s no shortage of amazing drumming videos that will inspire you. Looking back, here are some valuable skills I gained from studying other drummers. The drummers in the music I loved to listen to most were my earliest influences and drum heroes.
I wasn’t conscious of it at the time but I was naturally interested in learning the parts they played on the songs that I liked. The ones that stood out in a way that I liked ended up being drummers that I studied. When I was a young drummer, I started to pay attention to who the drummers were in my favourite bands. It naturally keeps us inspired and wanting more from ourselves. Every drummer needs to look up to others who have worked hard and excelled as drummers. He broke down this technique in his two highly acclaimed instructional Hudson Music DVDs, “Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer”. It has been commented on many times before that Jojo possesses very high technical abilities both in his hands and feet. Jojo Mayer is a very creative and ingenuitive musician. It was that among other contributing factors that forced Jojo to stop the Prohibited Beatz parties. Look up the “Cabaret Law” for some nice casual reading. At the Drumeo VIP dinner, he shared the entire story of how he was no longer allowed to host these parties, as people well into the thousands would attend.
Prohibited Beats was the first Nerve album release, but there were also major parties that Jojo hosted in NYC that he called “Prohibited Beatz”. I have been listening to Nerve since early on – in fact, it was the Prohibited Beats album where I discovered them with the incredible tune “Far”.
The night prior to this interview was when Nerve closed the festival with a tremendous performance that blew the minds of those in attendance. This interview with Jojo was the last one that I recorded during the Drumeo Festival in 2020. It’s not a paradigm shift for the most part.”
